In his early twenties, Baizhu began studying under a renowned doctor, a mentor whose expertise was matched only by his enigmatic demeanor. After nine rigorous years of apprenticeship, Baizhu graduated, expecting new opportunities or guidance. Instead, his teacher handed him a stack of research papers and dismissed him without explanation.

It wasn't until later that Baizhu discovered the truth; his teacher had been suffering from an unknown degenerative disease. The research papers were a lifetime's worth of work on the illness - a desperate attempt to understand and cure it. Among the findings, Baizhu uncovered something even more shocking - his mentor had been experimenting on himself, sacrificing his body to advance his studies.

Fascinated and inspired, Baizhu threw himself into the research, driven by the wealth of knowledge left behind. He followed in his teacher's footsteps - literally. Not only did he willingly contract the same disease, but he also began experimenting on himself, determined to succeed where his mentor had failed. His goal even went beyond curing the disease. Baizhu dreamed of creating a medicine that could halt the body's natural decay, extending human life indefinitely. If he could reverse the illness' effects, perhaps he could stop the aging process altogether.

It was a noble dream, and it technically harmed no one but himself. Yet the research took its toll. Over the years, Baizhu's experiments reached a dead end, and his health deteriorated. The disease ravaged his body, forcing him to undergo multiple organ transplants to replace failing systems. Now, his condition is fragile, and under Mnemosyne protocols, he's classified as disabled, requiring weekly medical checkups to monitor his declining state.

Despite his failing health, Baizhu refused to abandon his dream. Together with his adoptive daughter, Qiqi, he joined the Mnemosyne, seeking new horizons for his research. As a member of the Medical division, he hopes to find answers among the stars, using advanced technology and uncharted discoveries to push the boundaries of medicine. His ultimate goal remains unchanged; to create a cure, not just for the disease, but for the limits of human life itself. Maybe even to make humanity immortal.

If he finds no cure and passes away, Baizhu knows he should pass on his work to someone else, just as his teacher did. Unlike his mentor, however, he's made one promise to himself - no one else will be tempted by his experiment. That part lives or dies with him.

Qiqi (pronounced Chi-chi) was adopted by Baizhu when she was five, and was ten at the launch of the Mnemosyne. He loves her dearly, and like many crew members with family, she's currently resting in the settler's cryo bay.

As a baby, Qiqi was abandoned by her bio mother in winter and froze to death. She was fully dead for over three hours before brought back to life by some of the latest medical interventions, but didn't revive unscathed. She's unable to show emotions, speaks monotonously and has a terrible short-term memory. However, she's a sweet girl who feels a lot even if she doesn't show it, and really likes coconut milk.
